Let \(I\subset K[x_1,\dots,x_r]\) be a monomial ideal. The present work focuses on the maximal generating degree function, \(d(\overline{I^n})\), of the integral closure of \(I^n\). The author defines \[ \delta(I) = \max\{|\mathbf{v}| : \mathbf{v}\in V(I)\}, \] where \(V(I)\) denotes the set of vertices (minimal faces) of the Newton polyhedron of \(I\). In Theorem 2.7, he shows that \[ \delta(I)n\leq d(\overline{I^n})\leq \delta(I)n + \dim K[x_1,\dots,x_r]/I. \] The normal degree excess function of \(I\) is then defined as \[ \overline{\epsilon}(I;n) = d(\overline{I^n}) - \delta(I)n. \] The author constructs examples of monomial ideals for which the bounds for \(d(\overline{I^n})\) are sharp, as well as examples of monomial ideals for which \(\overline{\epsilon}(I;n)\) are not monotone functions. In Theorem 5.3, the index \[ \overline{\operatorname{gstab}}(I) := \min \{ n_0 : \overline{\epsilon}(I;n) = \overline{\epsilon}(I;n_0), \text{ for all } n\geq n_0\} \] is shown to be bounded above by \(\min\{r(r-1)\delta(I)^{r-2}, r\delta(I)^{r-1} \}\).
