The Minimal Model Program has recently been extended to threefolds defined over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic \(p>5\) (see for example [\textit{C. Birkar}, Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 49, No. 1, 169--212 (2016; Zbl 1346.14040); \textit{C. D. Hacon} and \textit{C. Xu}, J. Am. Math. Soc. 28, No. 3, 711--744 (2015; Zbl 1326.14032)]). The authors of the paper under review establish the MMP with scaling for threefolds in characteristic \(p=5\). The main point is to show existence of flips. Theorem 1.1. Let \((X,\Delta)\) be a \(\mathbb{Q}\)-factorial three-dimensional dlt pair over a perfect field \(k\) of characteristic \(p=5\). If \(f:X\rightarrow Z\) is a \((K_X+\Delta)\)-flipping contraction, then the flip \(f^+:X^+ \rightarrow Z\) exists. The difficulty in proving Theorem 1.1 is due to the fact that if \(\Delta=S+B\) where \(S\) is an irreducible divisor and if \(f:X\rightarrow Z\) is a pl-flipping contraction, then \((X,\Delta)\) may not be relatively purely F-regular when \(p = 5\). The authors circumvent this problem by considering pl-flips that admit dlt 6-complements.
