Let \(G\) be a locally compact group. For the Fourier algebra \(A(G)\) let \(\mathcal{M}A(G)\) be the space of multipliers of \(A(G)\), i.e., continuous functions \(m\) on \(G\) such that \(mA(G)\subset A(G)\). The closure of \(A(G)\) in \(\mathcal{M}A(G)\) is denoted by \(A_M(G)\) and called a multiplier algebra of \(A(G)\). This notion was introduced by \textit{B. Forrest} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 114, No. 4, 965--970 (1992; Zbl 0753.43001)] and studied by several authors. \par In the present paper the authors generalize the notion of a multiplier algebra to the case of a faithful commutative Banach algebra \(A\). The definition of the multiplier algebra \(A_M\) is analogous to the one of \(A_M(G)\). In the first part of the paper the authors examine the algebra \(A_M\) and show, among other things, that many properties of \(A\) and \(A_M\) (like regularity, weak regularity, unique uniform norm, etc.) are common for both of them. \par The main results of the paper concern the spaceability. It is proved that either \(A=A_M\) or \(A_M \setminus A\) is spaceable. As a direct collorary to this theorem it is proved that a locally compact group \(G\) is compact if and only if \(A_M(G) \setminus \mathcal{L}A(G)\) is not spaceable (where \(\mathcal{L}A(G)=L^1(G)\cap A(G)\) with the norm \(\Vert f\Vert_{\mathcal{L}A(G)}=\Vert f\Vert_1+\Vert f\Vert_{A(G)}\)). Another consequence of this result is that a locally compact group \(G\) is discrete if and only if \(L^1(G) \setminus \mathcal{L}A(G)\) is not spaceable. Moreover, it is proved that for a discrete locally compact group \(G\), \(A_M(G)\) is a BSE-algebra if and only if \(G\) is \(M\)-weakly amenable.
