Let \(k\) be a field and let \(X\) be an abelian threefold over \(k\). Fix a polarization \(\mathcal{L}\) on \(X\), and let \({\mathrm{Aut}}_k(X,{\mathcal{L}})\) be the group of automorphisms of the polarized abelian threefold \((X,{\mathcal{L}})\) over \(k\). This group is a finite group. The paper under review addresses a classification problem. More precisely, to classify all finite groups \(G\) (up to isomorphism) such that there exists a field \(k\) and an abelian variety \(X\) of dimension \(3\) over \(k\) with \(G={\mathrm{Aut}}_k(X,{\mathcal{L}})\) for some polarization \(\mathcal{L}\) of \(X\). The paper presents an almost complete answer to this question when \(k\) is a finite field, by classifying all finite groups \(G\) that can be realized as \({\mathrm{Aut}}_k(X,{\mathcal{L}})\) of a polarized abelian threefold \((X,{\mathcal{L}})\) over \(k\), which are maximal, in the sense that there is no finite group \(H\) such that \(G\) is isomorphic to a proper subgroup of \(H\) and \(H={\mathrm{Aut}}_k(Y,{\mathcal{M}})\) for some abelian threefold \(Y\) over \(k\) that is \(k\)-isogenous to \(X\) with a polarization \({\mathcal{M}}\). More precisely, the result is formulated in the following Theorem. The list of possible maximal automorphism groups of a polarized abelian threefold \((X,{\mathcal{L}})\) over \(k\) is presented when \(X\) is simple, a product of a simple abelian surface and an elliptic curve, a product of three pairwise non-isogenous elliptic curves, a product of a power of an elliptic curve and an elliptic curve that are non-isogenous, a power of an ordinary elliptic curve, and a power of a supersingular elliptic curve, respectively.
