The paper is concerned with the boundary value problems for an irregularly degenerate elliptic equation \[ \left\{\begin{array}{l} u_{xx}''+y u_{yy}''+c(y)u_y'-a(y)u=f(x,y),\,\,\,(x,y)\in \Omega,\\ u(0,y)=u(1,y)=u(x,b)=u(x,0)=0, \end{array} \right.\tag{1} \] and \[ \left\{\begin{array}{l} u_{xx}''+y u_{yy}''+c(y)u_y'-a(y)u=f(x,y),\,\,\,(x,y)\in \Omega,\\ u(0,y)=u(1,y)=u(x,b)=0,\,\,\,|u(x,0)|<+\infty, \end{array} \right.\tag{2} \] where \(\Omega=\{(x,y),\,\,0<x<1,\,\,0<y<b\}\), and the functions \(a(y)\) and \(c(y),\,\,y\in [0,b]\) can be represented by series in integer powers of \(y\) which converge on the interval \((-R,R)\) for some \(R>b\). By using the method of spectral isolation of singularities, the author constructs the formal solutions of problems \((1)\) and \((2)\) in the form of Poisson series. Then, based on the estimates of some associated Green functions, he proves the convergence of these series to the classical solutions of \((1)\) and \((2)\).
