The authors consider a system of first order coupled mode equations in \(d\) dimensions governing the envelopes of wavepackets in nonlienear periodic media. Bifurcation of standing gap solitons from the zero solution is proven, under the assumptions of a spectral gap and a generic assumption with regard to the dispersion relation at the spectral edge. The proof makes use of a Lyapunov-Schmidt decomposition in Fourier variables and a nested Banach fixed point argument. The reduced bifurcation equation is a perturbed stationary nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Solitary waves are found using a persistence argument beginning with solitary waves of an unperturbed equation. The persistence holds in a symmetric subspace due to a known spectral stability result. Finally, a numerical example of bifurcating gap solitons in two dimensions is presented.
