Characterization results for symmetric continuous distributions based on the properties of \(k\)-records and spacings (Q2173364)

This paper deals with the characterization of symmetric continuous distributions through the properties of records and spacings. The author proves that, for continuous distributions, the equality in distribution of lower and upper records implies the symmetry of the distribution. Characterizations of symmetric continuous distributions using spacings and moments properties of functions of lower and upper records are given as well. Previous results were available for the characterization of continuous symmetric distributions using properties of order statistics. This paper can be considered a generalization of those works.
