The authors show how some recent versions of the Newton method for underdetermined equations can be employed for determining sparse and least-\(\ell^1\)-norm solutions to unconstrained nonlinear optimal control problems. As a practical illustration of the new theoretical results, a mathematical pendulum with friction is considered and the experimental results are presented.
