Let \(\sigma(T)\) be the spectrum of a bounded linear operator \(T\) on an infinite-dimensional complex Banach space \(X\). For \(\varepsilon\in(0,1)\), the conditional \(\varepsilon\)-pseudo\-spectrum is defined by \(\Sigma_\varepsilon(T):=\sigma(T)\cup\{\lambda\in\mathbb{C}:\|\lambda-I\|\,\|(\lambda-T)^{-1}\|<1/\varepsilon\}\). The authors introduce the essential conditional \(\varepsilon\)-pseudo\-spectrum by \[\Sigma_{e,\varepsilon}(T):=\bigcap_{K\in\mathcal{K}(X)}\Sigma_\varepsilon (T+K),\] where \(\mathcal{K}(X)\) is the set of all compact operators on \(X\). Several properties of \(\Sigma_\varepsilon(T)\) and \(\Sigma_{e,\varepsilon}(T)\) are discussed in the paper under review. A~sample result of the paper says that, if \(T\) is a bounded linear operator on \(X\) and \(V\) is an invertible operator on \(X\) with \(k:=\|V^{-1}\|\,\|V\|\), then for \(B:=V^{-1}TV\) and \(\varepsilon\in(0,1)\) satisfying \(0<k^2\varepsilon<1\), one has \[\Sigma_{\varepsilon/k^2}(T)\subseteq\Sigma_\varepsilon (B) \subseteq \Sigma_{k^2\varepsilon}(T)\] and \[\Sigma_{e,\varepsilon/k^2}(T)\subseteq\Sigma_{e,\varepsilon} (B) \subseteq \Sigma_{e,k^2\varepsilon}(T).\]
