Let \(G\) be a discrete abelian group and let \(\mathbf N\) be a positive integer. The author studies the bounded operators on \(\ell_{\mathbf N}^2(G)\), especially the convolution operators in \({\mathcal B} (\ell_{\mathbf N}^2(G))\), where \({\mathcal B} (\ell_{\mathbf N}^2(G))\) is the space of all bounded operators on \(\ell_{\mathbf N}^2(G)\). It is proved that these bounded convolution operators can be described as those bounded operators that commute with translations, and they form a \(C^*\)-subalgebra of \({\mathcal B} (\ell_{\mathbf N}^2(G))\) which is isomorphic to \({\mathcal M}_{\mathbf N} (L^{\infty} (\hat G))\), the \(C^*\)-algebra of the \({\mathbf N}\times {\mathbf N}\) matrices with entries in \(L^{\infty}(\hat G)\). It is also proved that a convolution operator \(\mathcal A\) is invertible if and only if \(\operatorname{ess\,inf}_{\xi \in \hat G} \vert \det \hat A (\xi) \vert > 0\), where the convolution operator \(\mathcal A\) of \({\mathcal B} (\ell_{\mathbf N}^2(G))\) is identified with \(\hat A\) in \({\mathcal M}_{\mathbf N} (L^{\infty} (\hat G))\) under the isomorphism above. These results are used to study Riesz systems that arise from the action of \(G\) on a finite set of elements of a Hilbert space.
