Some mixed-mode numerical integration algorithms are here developed to combine classical ordinary differential equation (ODE) integrators with quantized state system (QSS) methods and their convergence and numerical stability properties are studied. The proposed scheme consists of splitting an ODE using QSS algorithms in presence of discontinuities or stiffness. The performance of this implementation is compared with that of different ODE solvers for ODEs heterogeneous dynamics, in which some subsystems are better suited for QSS methods while the remaining subsystems can be more efficiently integrated by classic ODE solvers, thus reducing the CPU times by more than one order of magnitude. Two simulation examples are presented, a model that represents the heating around a switching mode power electronic converter and a one dimensional advection-diffusion-reaction problem where the diffusion coefficient changes with the space.
