The author investigates conditions which imply that the direct sum of two Banach spaces has the weak fixed point property, that is, conditions which imply that every nonexpansive self-mapping of a nonempty, weakly compact, convex subset of the direct sum has a fixed point. Using the coefficient \(M(X)\) introduced and investigated by \textit{T. Domínguez Benavides} [Houston J. Math. 22, No. 4, 835--849 (1996; Zbl 0873.46012)], the author proves that, if \(X_1\) is a Banach space with \(M(X_1)>1\), \(X_2\) is a Banach space with the weak fixed point property, and \(Z=(\mathbb{R}^2,\|\cdot\|_Z)\) is uniformly convex, then the direct sum \(X_1\oplus_Z X_2\) has the weak fixed point property. Whether the direct sum of two Banach spaces which have the weak fixed point property also has the weak fixed point property remains an open question.
