A level \(2\) structure on a curve is a basis for the \(2\)-torsion of the Jacobian of the curve. The purpose of the interesting paper under review is to study the cohomology of the moduli space of genus \(3\) curves with symplectic level \(2\) structure (see also [\textit{O. Bergvall}, Geom. Dedicata 202, 165--191 (2019; Zbl 1423.14182)]). In particular, the author determines the cohomology groups of the quartic and hyperelliptic loci inside the aforementioned moduli space as representations of the symmetric group \(S_7\) together with their mixed Hodge structures. The proof relies on equivariant point counts over finite fields and purity arguments. Moreover, the result determines the weighted Euler characteristic of the whole moduli space of genus three curves with level two structure.
