This paper is inspired by the recent progress on sign patterns of multiplicative functions such as Liouville functions [\textit{K. Matomäki} and \textit{M. Radziwiłł}, Ann. Math. (2) 183, No. 3, 1015--1056 (2016; Zbl 1339.11084); \textit{K. Matomäki} et al. [Forum Math. Sigma 4, Paper No. e14, 44 p. (2016; Zbl 1394.11066)]. Roughly speaking, the author introduces a general class of dynamically defined arithmetic functions, and observes that the methods mentioned in the works above apply to all elements in this general class. This can be read as saying that any ``ill-behaved'' element of this general class can form an obstruction for further progress in more specific situations (such as the case of the Liouville function), unless the methods used in the specific setting are adapted in such a way as to circumvent the obstructions that arise in the general setting. Inside his general class of functions, the author constructs explicit examples which exhibit interesting sign patterns.
