The asymptotically Anti-de Sitter solutions of gravitational theories cannot be obtained by taking initial data with constraints on a spacelike surface, and choosing an arbitrary conformal metric on the timelike boundary at infinity. The purpose of the article is to give an explanation of why there is the need to satisfy an infinite number of corner conditions where the initial data surface hits the boundary. Implications for holography are also put into discussion in order to reach a deeper understanding of holography.
