Glauberman's \(ZJ\)-theorem is one of the most powerful tools in local group theoretical analysis, as it provides a general condition which ensures that \(p\)-fusion is controlled by a single \(p\)-local subgroup. The purpose of this article is to investigate converses of Glauberman's \(ZJ\)-theorem and its block theoretic analogue, proved by \textit{R. Kessar} et al. [J. Algebra 257, No. 2, 393--413 (2002; Zbl 1053.20007)] for a finite group \(G\). The main result of the paper is: Theorem 1.1: Let \(G\) be a finite quasisimple group and let \(B\) be a \(p\)-block of \(G\) with \(p\) odd. Then \(B\) is \(ZJ\)-controlled if and only if \(B\) is controlled. Thus the classification of controlled blocks of quasisimple groups \(G\) [\textit{J. An}, Adv. Math. 227, No. 3, 1165--1194 (2011; Zbl 1247.20008)] gives also a classification of \(ZJ\)-controlled blocks of \(G\). As an application, the author obtains a classification of \(Qd(p)\)-free quasisimple groups (here the quadratic group \(Qd(p)\) is the semidirect product of \(C_{p} \times C_{p}\) and \(SL_{2}(p)\), with the natural action).
