The authors extend the classical constructions of genera on a compact manifold without boundary (the signature, \(\hat A\)-genus, Todd genus) to families of manifolds parametrised by a space \(X\). This requires the construction of certain generalised Pontryagin and Chern classes as maps from bordism cohomology to the singular cohomology of \(X\). These relate to the characteristic classes on \(K\)-theory via the Chern-Dold character. There are several minor misprints concerning citations in the text. (For instance, in [\textit{M. J. Hopkins}, in: Proceedings of the international congress of mathematicians, ICM 2002, Beijing, China, August 20--28, 2002. Vol. I: Plenary lectures and ceremonies. Beijing: Higher Education Press; Singapore: World Scientific/distributor. 291--317 (2002; Zbl 1031.55007)] the author (M. J. Hopkins) is missing, in [\textit{V. M. Bukhshtaber}, Mat. Sb., Nov. Ser. 83(125), 575--595 (1970; Zbl 0204.23503)] the author (V. M. Bukhshtaber) is missing, and there is a mistake in citing the title (correct: The Chern-Dold character in cobordisms. I).)
