This paper consists of two parts: in the first part the author shows that each polynomial exponential functor on complex finite-dimensional inner product spaces is defined up to equivalence of monoidal functors by an involutive solution to the Yang-Baxter equation, which determines an extremal character on \(S_\infty\) classified by Thoma parameters [\textit{E. Thoma}, Math. Z. 85, 40--61 (1964; Zbl 0192.12402)]. Furthermore, those parameters resulting from polynomial exponential functors are of a special kind. \par Exponential functors yield in the second part of the paper the input datum for a construction of higher twists over \(SU(n)\) in a localisation of \(K\)-theory generalising the twist given by the basic gerbe; see [\textit{E. Meinrenken}, Enseign. Math. (2) 49, No. 3--4, 307--333 (2003; Zbl 1061.53034)] and [\textit{M. Murray} and \textit{D. Stevenson}, J. Geom. Phys. 58, No. 11, 1571--1590 (2008; Zbl 1154.55011)].
