This paper deals with the following Cauchy problem for the generalized Camassa-Holm equation with both arbitrary dissipation and dispersion \[ u_t-u_{txx}-u^Nu_{xxx}-\beta u^{N-1}u_xu_{xx} +(\beta +1)u^Nu_x+k(1-\partial_x^2)u_x +\lambda(1-\partial_x^2)u=0, \] with compactly supported initial data and \(\lambda>0\). They study the local well-posedness, the global existence, the propagation speed of strong solutions. They compare the case \(\lambda=k=0\) with the one \(k\not=0\), \(\lambda>0\).
