    Let \(\Phi\in H^5(\mathbb{R}^2;[0,\infty))\) be a given potential. The existence and uniqueness of a local (in time) strong solution to the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes-Smoluchowski system \begin{align*} \partial_t \rho + \operatorname{div}(\rho u) & = 0, \cr \partial_t(\rho u) + \operatorname{div}(\rho u\otimes u) + \nabla\left(a \rho^\gamma + \eta \right) & = \mu \Delta u + (\lambda+\mu)\nabla\operatorname{div} u - (\eta+\beta\rho)\nabla\Phi, \cr \partial_t\eta + \operatorname{div}\left(\eta (u-\nabla\Phi) \right) & = \Delta\eta, \end{align*} where \(x\in\mathbb{R}^2\) and \(t>0\), are shown with vacuum far-field behaviour \[ \lim_{|x|\to\infty} (\rho,u,\eta)(x,t) = (0,0,0), \qquad t>0, \] and sufficiently smooth initial conditions \((\rho,\rho u,\eta)(0)=(\rho_0,m_0,\eta_0)\) decaying suitably as \(|x|\to\infty\). Here, \(a>0\), \(\mu>0\), \(\lambda+\mu\ge 0\), and \(\gamma>1\). The existence proof relies on an approximation procedure and weighted estimates.
