Let \(G\) be a connected reductive group defined over a number field \(k\). In this paper, the authors construct the Schwartz space \(\mathcal{S}=\mathcal{S}(G(k)\!\setminus\! G(\mathbb{A}))\), which is an adelic version of the Schwartz space \(\mathcal{S}(\Gamma\!\setminus\!G_\infty)\) defined by \textit{W. Casselman} [Can. J. Math. 41, No. 2, 285--320 (1989; Zbl 0723.22010)] for a discrete subgroup \(\Gamma\) of \(G_\infty\). Let \(C^\infty(G(\mathbb{A}))\) be the space of smooth functions \(G(\mathbb{A}) \to \mathbb{C}\). For a compact open subgroup \(L\) of \(G(\mathbb{A}_f)\), the authors construct a Fréchet space \(\mathcal{S}^L\) consisting of functions in \(C^\infty(G(k)\!\setminus\!G(\mathbb{A}))^L\) satisfying some technical requirements. Then \[ \mathcal{S}^L \cong \bigoplus_{c \in C} \mathcal{S}(\Gamma_{c,L}\!\setminus\!G_\infty), \] where \(C\) is a finite set such that \(G(\mathbb{A}_f)=\coprod_{c \in C} G(k)c L\). The space \(\mathcal{S}\) is defined as a strict inductive limit of the Fréchet spaces \(\mathcal{S}^L\). The strong dual \(\mathcal{S}'\), called the space of tempered distributions on \(G(k)\!\setminus\! G(\mathbb{A})\), can be identified with the projective limit of the spaces \((\mathcal{S}^L)'\). The authors study \(\mathcal{S}'\) and investigate applications to automorphic forms on \(G(\mathbb{A})\). They consider the right regular representation \((r,\mathcal{S})\) of \(G(\mathbb{A})\) and its contragredient \((r',\mathcal{S}').\) For \(G\) semisimple, they describe the closed irreducible admissible subrepresentations of \(\mathcal{S}'\). The authors also define the Schwartz space \(\mathcal{S}(G(\mathbb{A}))\) and apply it to study the Poincaré series on \(G(\mathbb{A})\).
