This work is concerned with the study of \(\mathrm{Spin}(7)\)-structures (with torsion) which are invariant under the action of \(S^1\). Recall that \(\mathrm{Spin}(7)\) is one of the two exceptional groups appearing in the Berger classification, the other one is \(G_2\). Also recall that \textit{V. Apostolov} and \textit{S. Salamon} [Commun. Math. Phys. 246, No. 1, 43--61 (2004; Zbl 1067.53039)] used the \(S^1\)-reduction of \(G_2\) with Kähler quotient, to give examples of metrics with \(G_2\) holonomy. The paper under review parallels this method in the \(\mathrm{Spin}(7)\) setting. The first result is that \(G_2\)-holonomy in the \(\mathrm{Spin}(7)\) setting appears only in dimension \(4\) and requires the presence of a Calabi-Yau structure. Inverting this construction, the author constructs examples of \(\mathrm{SU}(4)\)-holonomy metrics and gives a formula for the Ricci curvature of a \(\mathrm{Spin}(7)\)-structure in terms of torsion.
