Given a sequence \((\gamma_n)\) of complex numbers, the recurrence relations \(R_{2n}(z)=\gamma_n R_{2n-1}(z)+R_{2n-2}(z)\) and \(R_{2n+1}(z)=\overline{\gamma_n}z R_{2n}(z)+(1-|\gamma_n|^2)zR_{2n-1}(z)\) determine the numerators \(P_n\) and the denominators \(Q_n\) of the \(n\)th convergent of the Schur continued fraction with respect to \((\gamma_n)\) by starting the recursion with \(P_0(z)=\gamma_0\), \(P_1(z)=z\) and \(Q_0(z)=1\), \(Q_1(z)=\overline{\gamma_0} z\), respectively. With \(\mathbb{T}\) denoting the unit circle and \(\overline{\mathbb{C}}\) the extended complex plane, Theorem~1 states that in the case \(1\ge |\gamma_n|\to 0\) the quotients \((P_{n-1}(z)w+P_n(z))/(Q_{n-1}(z)w+Q_n(z))\) converge spherically locally uniformly in \(\{(w,z):w \in \mathbb{C}\setminus \{0\}, \, z \in \overline{\mathbb{C}} \setminus \mathbb{T}\}\) and that the limit function \(f\), which is independent of \(w\) and satisfies \(f(z)=1/\overline{f}(1/z)\), cannot be extended to a function meromorphic in \(\overline{\mathbb{C}}\setminus B\) for any strict subarc \(B\) of \(\mathbb{T}\). A second theorem contains information about the convergence of Schur continued fractions and the corresponding functions \(f\) for limit periodic sequences \((\gamma_n)\).
