For the approximation of band-limited functions there is the classical Shannon sampling series over shifts of the so-called sinc-function as a kernel (sinc is \(\sin(\pi\cdot)/(\pi\cdot)\)). The advantage of this sampling form is its simplicity. It can be viewed as a cardinal interpolant (since the sinc-function is a Lagrange function over the integers) or as a quasi-interpolant (with a decaying kernel which is again the sinc-function). The authors point out its disadvantages: the strong requirement of band-limitedness of the approximand, the slow decay of the sinc-function, the lack of general asymptotic convergence estimates of the advanced type proven in this article. In particular, we wish to evaluate the approximand not only pointwise (which is possible due to its band-limimtedness in the classical setting) but as averages (so it need no more to be, e.g., continuous which fits many practical situations). Other kernels have been introduced for this purpose, e.g., \(K_w\) named after Kantorovich. The authors offer convergence estimates for families of such operators, including attractive orders of convergence if the approximands are in some Lipschitz classes. The authors use a suitable modulus of smoothness of absolute continuous functions for this purpose.
