The author studies weighted composition operators \(uC_\varphi\) acting on \(L^p\) spaces. The author considers two \(\sigma\)-finite and complete measure spaces \((X,\Sigma,\mu)\) and \((Y,\Gamma, \eta)\), \(u:Y\to \mathbb C\) and \(\varphi:Y\to X\) measurable functions so that \(\eta\varphi^{-1} << \mu\). Hence \(uC_\varphi(f)=u f\circ\varphi\) is well defined on equivalence classes. The results in the paper complete the existing ones on compactness and other properties for \(uC_\varphi:L^p(\mu)\to L^q(\eta)\) for \(1\le p,q\le \infty\). The author obtains a complete description of complete continuity for \(uC_\varphi:L^1(\mu)\to L^1(\eta)\) by the condition \(\eta(\varphi^{-1}(B)\cap \operatorname{supp} u)=0\). The author proves that compact weighted composition operators are always \(M\)-weakly compact, meaning that \(\lim _{n\to \infty} \|uC_\varphi(f_n)\|_{L^q(\eta)}=0\) for any bounded sequence \((f_n)\in L^p(\mu)\) such that \(\mu(\operatorname{supp} f_n\cap \operatorname{supp} f_m)=0\) for \(n\neq m\). The author extends \textit{H. Takagi}'s result [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 116, No. 2, 505--511 (1992; Zbl 0792.47036)] concerning compactness of weighted composition operators in the case \(1\le p=q<\infty\) to cover the cases \(1\le p,q\le \infty.\) In particular, the author shows that the properties compactness, weak compactness, complete continuity and \(M\)-weak compactness are all equivalent for \(uC_\varphi:L^\infty(\mu)\to L^\infty(\eta)\). The author shows that the weighted composition operators are always weakly compact in the case \(p=1\) and \(q=\infty\) and \(1\le q<p\le \infty\).
