A symmetric (strongly) shifted monomial ideal \(I\), in a polynomial ring over a field, is a monomial ideal which is invariant under permutation of variables and moreover it is closed with respect to the operation that, in the \(n\)-tuple of exponents \((e_0,\dots,e_n)\) of a monomial in \(I\), changes \(e_i,e_j\), where \(e_i < e_j\), into \(e_i+1,e_j-1\). These ideals arise in a natural way in the study of symbolic powers of the ideals of \textit{star configurations}. Star configurations are collections of linear subspaces in \(\mathbb P^n\), obtained from the intersections of a fixed, suitably general, finite set of hyperplanes. Star configurations are relevant, for their combinatorial properties, in several aspects of algebraic geometry, both theoretical and devoted to applications. The authors provide a formula for the graded Betti numbers of shifted monomial ideals in terms of the exponents of a set of monomial generators. From the formulas, the author determine other invariants of shifted monomial ideals, as for instance their Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
