Summary: \textit{A. D. Berenstein} and \textit{A. N. Kirillov} [``Cactus group and Gelfand-Tsetlin group'', Preprint, RIMS-1858, Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto University (2016), \url{http://www.kurims.kyoto-u.ac.jp/preprint/file/RIMS1858.pdf}] have studied the action of Bender-Knuth moves on semistandard tableaux. \textit{I. Losev} [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 21, No. 6, 1729--1750 (2019; Zbl 1416.05296)] has studied a cactus group action in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory; in type \(A\) this action can also be identified in the work of \textit{A. Henriques} and \textit{J. Kamnitzer} [Duke Math. J. 132, No. 2, 191--216 (2006; Zbl 1123.22007)]. We establish the relationship between the two actions. We show that the Berenstein-Kirillov group is a quotient of the cactus group. We use this to derive previously unknown relations in the Berenstein-Kirillov group. We also determine precise implications between subsets of relations in the two groups, which yields a presentation for cactus groups in terms of Bender-Knuth generators.
