A homeomorphism \(f:X\rightarrow X\) of a metric space \((X,f)\) is expansive if there exists \(\varepsilon>0\) such that for each nonempty subset \(C\) of \(X\), the following implication holds: \[ \sup\{\text{diameter}(f^{n}(C)):n\in \mathbb {Z}\}\leq \varepsilon \Rightarrow\text{diameter}(C)=0. \] The pair \((X,f)\) is continuum-wise expansive (cw-expansive) if this implication holds for all continua in \(X\) (nonemtpy, compact connected subspaces of \(X\)). The pair \((X,f)\) is distal if for each nonempty subset \(C\) of \(X\), the following implication holds: \[ \inf\{\text{diameter}(f^{n}(C)):n\in \mathbb {Z}\}=0 \Rightarrow\text{diameter}(C)=0. \] As in the previous case, the pair \((X,f)\) is continuum-wise distal (cw-distal) if this implication holds for all continua of \(X\). In [Can. J. Math.45, No. 3, 576--598 (1993; Zbl 0797.54047)] \textit{H. Kato} introduced the notion of continuum-wise expansive homeomorphism, thus embedding expansive systems into continuum theory. Here the authors embed distal systems into continuum theory by introducing and studying cw-distal homeomorphisms. They generalize results concerning distal homeomorphisms to the case of cw-distal homeomorphisms. For instance, they prove that a cw-homeomorphism of a compact metric space of positive topological dimension cannot be cw-distal. They also introduce the notion of cw-distal measure and they prove that a Borel probability measure is cw-distal if and only if the proximal cells are totally disconnected relative to the measure.
