The authors consider a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for second order elliptic partial differential equation with indefinite weight. It is shown that the set of bifurcation points of the given problem with respect to the set of positive (negative) functions is nonempty. As a main result, it is proved that there exist global continua of solutions of the eigenvalue problem emanating from bifurcation intervals surrounding the trivial solutions related to the principal eigenvalues of the linear problem which are contained in the classes of positive and negative functions. This is mainly based on the works of \textit{H. Berestycki} [J. Differ. Equations 26, 375--390 (1977: Zbl 0331.34020)] and of the authors [Z. Anal. Anwend. 38, No. 1, 1--15 (2019: Zbl 1412.35087)].
