Let \(L\) be a Lie algebra over a ring of scalars in which \(2\) and \(3\) are invertible, and let \(a\) be a \textit{Jordan element} in \(L\), i.e. \(\operatorname{ad}_a^3L=0\). To the pair \((L, a)\), we can functorially associate a Jordan algebra \(L_a\), which inherits most properties of \(L\) and reflects the nature of the element \(a\). In the paper under review, the authors give a sufficient (although not necessary) condition for \(L_a\) be special. Under a more technical condition, they also prove a similar result for the \textit{subquotient} (a Jordan pair) of a Lie algebra with respect to an abelian inner ideal.
