In this paper the authors present a method of constructing multidimensional wavelets, which are not tensor products of univariate wavelets. Their guiding principle is the well-known Unitary Extension Principle, and their method is based on the sub-QMF condition for the lowpass mask (instead of the typical QMF condition used in the construction of orthonormal wavelets). They show the existence of a sum of Hermitian squares representation for a nonnegative trigonometric polynomial, where this polynomial is related to the sub-QMF condition for the lowpass mask. They also provide an analysis of some aspects of the issue of the vanishing moments of the wavelets arising from this method.
