      This paper deals with a self-adjoint elliptic second order differential operator of the form \[A_{\epsilon}=b(D)^*g\left(\frac{x}{\epsilon}\right)b(D), \quad \epsilon>0,\quad\text{on }L^2(\mathbb R^d;\mathbb C^n)\tag{1},\] where \(D=-i\nabla.\) Let \(\Gamma\) be a lattice in \(\mathbb R^d\) and \(\Omega\) be the elementary cell of \(\Gamma\). Here, \(g(x)\) is a \(\Gamma\)-periodic hermitian \((m\times m)\)-matrix valued function such that \(g, g^{-1}\in L_{\infty}\), \(g>0\), and \(b(D)=\sum_{j=1}^d b_jD_j\) where the \(b_j\) are constant \(m\times n\) matrices with \(m\geq n\). It is assumed that the rank of the symbol \(b(\xi)\) associated to \(b( D)\) satisfies \(\mathrm{rank}\,b(\xi)=n\) for \(\xi\not=0 \in\mathbb R^d\). Under additional suitable assumptions, the authors obtain approximations, in appropriate Sobolev norms, of \[\cos(A_{\epsilon}^{\frac{1}{2}} \tau)\quad \text{and}\quad A_{\epsilon}^{-\frac{1}{2}} \sin(A_{\epsilon}^{\frac{1}{2}} \tau), \quad \tau\in\mathbb R.\] (Theorem 3). The sharpness of these results is investigated. The example of the Cauchy problem \[\partial^2_{\tau} u_{\epsilon}(x,\tau)=-A_{\epsilon}u_{\epsilon}(x,\tau),\] with \(u_{\epsilon}(x,0)=\Phi(x)\), \(\partial_{\tau} u_{\epsilon}(x,0)=\Psi(x)\), \(x\in\mathbb R^d\), \(\tau\in\mathbb R\), where \(\Phi,\Psi\) are in \((L^2(\mathbb R^d;\mathbb C^n)\), is presented.
