Hadamard's determinant inequality asserts that \(\det A \le a_{11}\cdots a_{nn}\) for any \(n\times n\) positive semidefinite matrix \(A\) and the equality holds if and only if \(A\) is diagonal. It has many proofs and one of them is via Schur's majorization inequality. \textit{X. Zhang} and \textit{S. Yang} [Acta Math. Appl. Sin. 20, No. 2, 269--274 (1997; Zbl 0902.15008)] obtained an elegant sharpening of the Hadamard inequality in the context of \(F\)-matrices. Their result includes a term involving off-diagonal entries of the matrix. Very recently \textit{M. Różański} et al. [Linear Algebra Appl. 532, 500--511 (2017; Zbl 1373.15034)] rediscovered some special cases of the result of \textit{X. Zhang} and \textit{S. Yang} [Acta Math. Appl. Sin. 20, No. 2, 269--274 (1997; Zbl 0902.15008)]. The authors revisit the result in the case of positive semi-definite matrices, giving a new proof in terms of majorization and a complete description of the conditions for equality in the positive definite case. They also mention a block extension, which makes use of a result of \textit{R. C. Thompson} [Can. Math. Bull. 4, 57--62 (1961; Zbl 0104.01201)].
