Let \(A\) be a Banach algebra. Then \(A\) is called an approximately semi-amenable Banach algebra if every continuous derivation \(D:A\rightarrow X^*\) from \(A\) into the dual \(A\)-bimodule of a Banach \(A\)-module \(X\) is approximately semi-inner; in other words, there are nets \((\xi_i)_i\) and \((\eta_i)_i\) in \(X^*\) such that for each \(a\in A,\) \(D(a)=\lim_i (a.\xi_i-\eta_i.a).\) If for every such \(D\) the corresponding nets \((\xi)_i\) and \((\eta)_i\) can be chosen identical, then \(A\) is called approximate amenable. In this paper, the authors show in several ways that the above notions are not the same. However, no non-trivial Segal algebra is approximate amenable, they prove that a SIN group \(G\) is amenable if and only if every Segal algebra on \(G\) is approximate semi-amenable. The authors also prove that if \((A_{\lambda})_{\lambda\in \Lambda}\) is a family of approximate semi-amenable Banach algebras, then so is the algebra \(\ell^p(A_{\lambda})\). This statement does not hold for an arbitrary family of approximately amenable Banach algebras.
