This paper deals with a class of ideals \(I\), called quintessential-modulated ideals for which quintessential sequences over \(I\) are an excellent analogue of asymptotic sequences over \(I\). Let \(R\) denote a commutative Noetherian ring and \(I\) an ideal of R. The concept of quintessential sequences over zero ideal was introduced by \textit{S. McAdam} and \textit{L. J. Ratliff jun.} in 1985 (see [J. Algebra 95, 217--235 (1985; Zbl 0599.13004)]). They showed that these sequences enjoy many of the basic properties of asymptotic sequences over zero ideal. It was shown, that quintessential sequences over nonzero ideals \(I\) are not a good analogue of asymptotic sequences over \(I\). In this paper, the authors introduced a new concept called quintessential grade of an ideal over another ideal. They make use of this concept to show that there exists a class of nonzero ideals \(I\) for which quintessential sequences over \(I\) are an excellent analogue of asymptotic sequences over \(I\). Also, they gave more results on quintessential sequences over an ideal and derived generalizations of some McAdam-Ratliff's results.
