Univariate splines are a useful means of approximation to (continuous or differentiable) functions, be it by interpolation, quasi-interpolation or for example the Schoenberg operator. This paper considers splines with multiple knots: splines are usually piecewise polynomials with a certain smoothness (differentiable up to a degree one less than the polynomials' degree); but if one uses the nodes more than once at the same point, the smoothness decreases (one by one). The authors study this phenomenon on fixed intervals specifically for second order splines.
