The paper discusses the merits of a finite elements discretization of the total variation based on non-conforming piecewise linear (P1) elements, also known as Crouzeix-Raviart finite elements. The step functions with straight jump are shown to be suitably measured by the energy, independent of the mesh. An adaptive Crouzeix-Raviart finite elements discretization for a quadrangular mesh in 2D is proposed. The error bounds for the porposed non-conforming P1 approximation of the total variation are shown to be no worse than standard P1. Numerical experiments are presented to compare the proposed adaptive Crouzeix-Raviart scheme to four different discretization schemes.
