It has been conjectured that the number \(N_n(H)\) of isomorphism classes of number fields of degree \(n\le 2\) and discriminant \(d\) with \(|d|\le H\) satisfies \[N_n(H) = (c_n+o(1))H\] for \(H\) tending to infinity. This is known to be true for \(n\le 5\) due to the work of \textit{H. Davenport} and \textit{H. Heilbronn} [Proc. R. Soc. Lond., Ser. A 322, 405--420 (1971; Zbl 0212.08101)] and \textit{M. Bhargava} [Ann. Math. (2) 162, No. 2, 1031--1063 (2005; Zbl 1159.11045); Ann. Math. (2) 172, No. 3, 1559--1591 (2010; Zbl 1220.11139)]. For larger \(n\) \textit{W. M. Schmidt} [in: Columbia University number theory seminar, New York, 1992. Paris: Société Mathématique de France. 189--195 (1995; Zbl 0827.11069)] obtained \[N_n(H)\ll_n H^{(n+2)/4},\] and this has been improved by \textit{J. S. Ellenberg} and \textit{A. Venkatesh} [Ann. Math. (2) 163, No. 2, 723--741 (2006; Zbl 1099.11068)] who got \[N_n(H)\ll_n H^{\exp(c\sqrt{\log n})}.\] The author proves the existence of a constant \(Q\) such that for \(n\ge Q\) one has \[N_n(H)\le n^{Qn\log^3n}H^{Q\log^3n},\] pointing out that this bound has been recently improved by \textit{R. J. L. Oliver} and \textit{F. Thorne} [``Upper bounds on number fields of given degree and bounded discriminant'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:2005.14110}]. They obtained for \(n\ge 6\) \[N_n(H)\ll_n H^{c\log^2n}\] with \(c=1.564\).
