This paper gives a fairly complete answer to a question posed by \textit{H. Brézis} and \textit{J. L. Vázquez} [Rev. Mat. Univ. Complutense Madr. 10, No. 2, 443--469 (1997; Zbl 0894.35038)] (Open problem 5) for singular extremal solutions of problems \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} -\Delta u & = \lambda f(u) & \mbox{ in } \Omega, \\ u & >0 & \mbox{ in } \Omega, \\ u & =0 & \mbox{ on } \partial\Omega, \\ \end{aligned} \right. \tag{\(P_\lambda\)} \] where \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{N}\) is a smooth bounded domain, \(N\ge 1\), \(\lambda \ge 0\) is a real parameter and \(f:[0, \infty) \to \mathbb{R}\) is a \(C^1\) function, nondecreasing, convex, \(f(0) >0\), and \( \lim_{t\to \infty} \frac{f(t)}{t} = \infty\). About \((P_\lambda)\), it is known that there is a finite positive value \(\lambda^*\) such that minimal solutions of \((P_\lambda)\) exist in the classical sense for \(0< \lambda < \lambda^*\), while no solutions exist for \(\lambda > \lambda^*\). The pointwise limit \[ u^* (x):= \lim_{\lambda \nearrow \lambda^*} u_\lambda(x) \] is a weak solution of \((P_{\lambda^*})\). It is shown in [\textit{X. Cabré} et al., Acta Math. 224, No. 2, 187--252 (2020; Zbl 1467.35172)] that for \(N\le 9\), the extremal solution \(u^*\) is bounded. In the present paper, the author shows that in the case \(N \ge 10\) and \(\Omega=B_1\), the unit ball in \(\mathbb{R}^{N}\), one can find nonlinearities \(f\) as above so that \(f'(u^*(r))\) is a function with prescribed behavior in a range larger than previously expected.
