Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group whose root system is of type $G_2$ defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_2$, and let $G_1$ be its first Frobenius kernel. Let St be the first Steinberg module and let $\nabla(2, 1)$ be the costandard module with highest weight $(2, 1)$. In this papers, the authors show that $\nabla(2, 1)$ does not have a good 2-filtration, and use the fact that $\mathrm{St}\oplus\nabla(2, 1)$ has a good filtration to provide a negative answer to the reverse implication $\Leftarrow$ of the particular case of Donkin's conjecture: ``A finite-dimensional $G$-module $M$ has a good 2-filtration if and only if $\mathrm{St}\oplus M$ has a good filtration''. A minimal counterexample (with only two composition factors) is also given the direct implication $\Rightarrow$, and this also provides a negative answer to the tilting module conjecture which in the present case would imply that the restriction to $G_1$ of the indecomposable tilting module $T (2, 2)$ of highest weight $(2, 2)$ is isomorphic to the projective cover of the simple module with highest weight $(0, 0)$.
