Let \(n\) be odd, \(m\) be even, and \(\varepsilon \in (0,1)\). Consider the Euclidean space \(\mathbb{R}^{n+m} = \mathbb{R}^{n} \oplus \mathbb{R}^{m}\) with orthogonal coordinates \(x_{1}, \dots, x_{n} \in \mathbb{R}^{n}\), and \(y_{1},\dots, y_{m} \in \mathbb{R}^{m}\) and the hypersurface in it defined by the equation \[ \bigg(\sqrt{x_{1}^{2} + \dots + x_{n}^{2}} - 1\bigg)^{2}+ y_{1}^{2} + \dots + y_{m}^{2} = \varepsilon^{2}. \tag{\(\star\)} \] Denote by \(\mathcal{P}\) (or \(\mathcal{P}^{\mathbb{C}}\), respectively), the space of all affine hyperplanes in \(\mathbb{R}^{n+m}\) (or in \(\mathbb{C}^{n+m}\), respectively), \(\mathcal{R}eg\) the subset in \(\mathcal{P}\) consisting of hyperplanes transversal to the hypersurface \((\star)\). Identifying any real hyperplane with its complexification, we consider \(\mathcal{P}\) as a subset of \(\mathcal{P}^{\mathbb{C}}\). The main result of the paper under review is devoted to the volume function associated with the hypersurface defined as above. Main result. For any \(\varepsilon \in (0,1)\), there is a four-valued analytic function on the space \(\mathcal{P}^{\mathbb{C}}\) such that one of the volumes cut by hyperplanes from the body bounded by hypersurface \((\star)\) in \(\mathbb{R}^{n+m}\) coincides in any point \(X \in \mathcal{P}\) with a sum of at most two (maybe zero) values of this function. The monodromy group of this function is the Klein four-group generated by permutations \(\binom{1234}{2143}\) and \(\binom{1234}{4321}\) of values. The main conjecture proposed by the author is that this four-valued analytic function is in fact algebraic, and a positive verification of this claim provides an answer on Arnold's problem 1987-14 [\textit{V. I. Arnold} (ed.), Arnold's problems. Translated and revised edition of the 2000 Russian original. Berlin: Springer; Moscow: PHASIS (2004; Zbl 1051.00002)] on the existence of bodies with smooth boundaries in \(\mathbb{R}^{N}\) for which the volume of the segment cut by any hyperplane from the body depends algebraically on the hyperplane.
