The author provides a sharp estimate of the derivative of a univariate (trigonometric) polynomial spline with equidistant knots. The estimate is based on a divided difference of first order and it is valid as long as the spline \(s\) is of minimal defect. For this purpose so-called Riesz identities are proved which are formulae to express derivatives \(s'\) of trigonometric splines in sums of equally spaced function evaluation (of \(s\)) with suitable coefficients. Using these, Riesz and Bernstein inequalities are established, not only for first, but also for higher order derivatives and with higher order divided differences of the splines.
