Tits \(n\)-gons arise as generalizations of Moufang polygons. They can be regarded as bipartite graphs in which there is an \emph{opposition relation} defined neighborhood of each vertex, a set of distinguished circuits of length \(2n\) is provided and some further axioms must be satisfied; see Section 2 in the paper under review or the forthcoming [\textit{B. Mühlherr} and \textit{R. M. Weiss}, ``Tits polygons'', Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. (to appear)] for details. In particular, Moufang polygons are Tits polygons in which the opposition relation is trivial. The aim of the paper under review is to classify all Tits quadrangles (so \(n=4\)) arising from pairs \((\Delta,T)\) where \(\Delta\) is an exceptional irreducible spherical building of rank \(m\geq 2\) and \(T\) is a Tits index of relative rank \(2\) whose absolute type is the Coxeter system of \(\Delta\). In particular, \(\Delta\) must be either an exceptional Moufang quadrangle of type \(E_6\), \(E_7\), \(E_8\) or \(F_4\) (arising from descent) or an exceptional building of rank at least \(3\) over arbitrary fields of arbitrary characteristic. The main result is to show that there is a correspondence between the pairs \((\Delta,T)\) giving rise to an exceptional Tits quadrangle and non-degenerate (but not necessarily anisotropic) quadrangular algebras, which have been previously classified in [the authors, J. Math. Soc. Japan 71, No. 4, 1321--1380 (2019; Zbl 1452.17033)].
