This book provides a comprehensive overview of various mathematical models as well as available control strategies for analyzing cancer dynamics in various therapeutic interventions. The book provides basic recommendations for the development of mathematical models of cancer dynamics: a general mathematical model is given and all the important mechanisms that must be taken into account when modeling this disease are listed. The authors carefully analyze the existing mathematical models of cancer dynamics, reflecting the effect of various therapeutic interventions. Most of the existing mathematical models are special cases of the general model, since many of them study cancer dynamics from a certain point of view and ignore the influence of other mechanisms. First, the mechanisms involved in tumor growth and interaction with the environment, types of therapeutic strategies for treating the disease, and a general model of tumor dynamics are shown. The various methods of data collection, interpretation and model building are then described in detail. The process of converting raw time series data into a mathematical model is considered. Subsequent chapters include an overview of various mathematical models from the literature, depending on the therapy ways. The evolution of models from one cell population to many is not discussed here, but the most advanced models are presented in terms of the number of cell populations and biochemical factors considered, as well as the assumptions involved; the mechanisms under consideration are listed in relation to the general model. An overview of the various control strategies used to treat cancer is presented, whether optimal, adaptive, or individualized. In conclusion, the authors propose an algorithm for transforming any new therapeutic strategy into a mathematical model: (1) list the cell populations that are most relevant for the therapy under consideration, (2) identify important biological mechanisms that affect the progression and regression of each involved cell population, (3) select a suitable pattern of growth or decay based on an intuitive understanding of the biological mechanisms involved, (4) link the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of a drug (c) with the dynamics of the cell population, (5) model the dynamics associated with drug susceptibility, toxicity and resistance, if any ; (6) evaluate the parameters of the model using experimental results obtained or already published in the literature, and (7) validate the model as additional clinical and experimental data become available.
