\textit{J. Lesieutre} [Invent. Math. 212, No. 1, 189--211 (2018; Zbl 1393.14012)] recently gave the first example of a projective variety whose automorphism group has non-finitely-generated discrete part. Shortly afterwards, \textit{T.-C. Dinh} and \textit{K. Oguiso} [Duke Math. J. 168, No. 6, 941--966 (2019; Zbl 1427.14085)] gave examples of the same phenomenon in any dimension. Their examples were defined over the complex numbers. In the current paper, the author gives more examples of the same phenomenon, but now involving surfaces over fields of positive characteristic. As in the Dinh-Oguiso examples, the varieties involved are smooth projective surfaces birational to \(K3\) surfaces. The author shows (Theorem 1.1) for such a surface \(Y\): -- If \(Y\) is defined over the algebraic closure of a finite field, then the automorphism group of \(Y\) is finitely generated; -- there is an example of such a \(Y\), defined over an algebraicaly closed field of transcendence degree 1 over a finite field, such that the automorphism group of \(Y\) is not finitely generated.
