In [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 360, No. 11, 5711--5769 (2008; Zbl 1157.53046)], \textit{M. Van den Bergh} introduced double Poisson algebras. Such structures readily allow one to relate noncommutative structures to Poisson geometry. In particular, if \(A\) is an algebra equipped with a double Poisson bracket, then \(\mathcal{O}(\mathrm{Rep}_n(A))\) becomes a Poisson algebra in a natural way. In the present paper, the authors study pre-Calabi-Yau algebras and their relation to double Poisson algebras. Let \(A\) be an \(A_\infty\)-algebra. An \(A_\infty\)-structure on \(A \oplus A^*[1-d]\) is pre-Calabi-Yau if \(A\) is an \(A_\infty\)-subalgebra in \(A \oplus A^*[1-d]\) and the structure is cyclically invariant with respect to the natural non-degenerate pairing on \(A \oplus A^*[1-d]\). Given an \(A_\infty\) structure on \(A \oplus A^*\), the authors show that there is a bracket defined by \[ \langle g \otimes f, \{\!\{ b,a \}\!\} \rangle := \langle m_3(a,f,b),g \rangle \] for \(a,b \in A\) and \(f,g \in A^*\). Here \(m_3(a,f,b)=c \in A\) corresponds to the component of type \(B\) of a solution to the Maurer-Cartan equation \(m_3:A \times A^* \times A \to A\). The authors show that \(A \oplus A^*\) along with this bracket satisfy all axioms of a double Poisson algebra. Moreover, it is shown that pre-Calabi-Yau structures of type B with \(m_i=0\) for \(i \geq 4\) are in one-to-one correspondence with double Poisson brackets \(\{\!\{ \cdot,\cdot \}\!\}:A \otimes A \to A \otimes A\) for an arbitrary associative algebra \(A\). Finally, the authors show that a pre-Calabi-Yau structure that is a restricted polyderivation induces a Poisson bracket on \(\mathrm{Rep}_n(A)\) which is \(\mathrm{GL}_n\) invariant.
