The author of the article considered a convection-diffusion problem with periodic boundary conditions on the unit square. An explicit-implicit time stepping method based on Lie splitting of a spatially discrete finite element version of the problem is proposed. Pyramid basis functions are used for the finite element discretization along with mass lumping for the time derivative term. It was shown that the error in the solution obtained through Lie splitting of the semi-discrete problem is of order \(O(h+k)\) under appropriate regularity assumptions on the data. Stability estimates for the fully discretized problem are derived and these lead to the an error estimate for the fully discrete solution.
