The paper is closely related to the Deligne-Simpson problem: Give necessary and sufficient conditions on the choice of the \(p+1\) conjugacy classes \(C_j\subset \mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{C})\) so that one can choose an irreducible \((p+1)\)-tuple of matrices \(M_j\in C_j\) such that \(M_1\cdots M_{p+1}=\mathrm{id}\). The author considers noncentral conjugacy classes \(C_j\subset G:=\mathrm{SL}_n(k)\), \(j=1\), \(\ldots\), \(m\), where \(k\) is a sufficiently large field. Set \(\Omega :=C_1\times \cdots \times C_m\). The paper determines necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a tuple \((X_1,\ldots ,X_m)\in \Omega\) such that \(\langle X_1,\ldots ,X_m\rangle\) is Zariski dense in \(G\). As a consequence, a new result concerning generic stabilizers in linear representations of algebraic groups is proved, and existing results on random \((r,s)\)-generation of finite groups of Lie type are strengthened.
