In this article, parabolic spines (i.e., really, second degree, quadratic splines) are being studied where the classical approach with quasi-interpolation and Schoenberg's operator are replaced by averaging instead of point evaluation. That is, the usual sums of B-splines as quasi-Lagrange functions are used, as in Schoenberg's formulation, but the point evaluation functional to the approximant is replaced by an integral (averaging functional). Chebyshev norms of errors of these approximations are computed for equally spaced points on grids; the main theorem includes bounds (best possible, exact bounds) on the errors of function approximation and on the error of the approximation to the derivative.
