The problem of classification of simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(2\) remains widely open. In ``large'' characteristics \((p > 3)\), in which this problem is solved, Cartan prolongations, filtrations, and associated filtered deformations play a crucial role, and relationship between algebras in different classes are often revealed using such deformations. The authors follow this approach. In characteristic \(2\) the situation is much more complicated and diverse, and requires a bit deal of accuracy and technical skills. The authors also employ a tool peculiar to characteristic \(2\) introduced earlier by them, namely, desuperization; roughly speaking, this is forgetting the superstructure. This demonstrates that considering Lie superalgebras along with Lie algebras is not merely a desire for generalization, but a necessity: even if we are interested in simple Lie algebras only, in characteristic \(2\), by all accounts, we should consider also Lie superalgebras and all these intertwinings between different classes. The authors consider Weisfeiler gradings of certain simple Lie algebras, compute Cartan prolongations of the corresponding nonpositive/nonnegative parts, give new realizations of certain Lie algebras as Lie algebras of vector fields (suitably understood in characteristic \(2\)), and construct new simple Lie algebras in characteristic \(2\). Besides containing new interesting constructions and observations, the paper -- actually, a small monograph, comprising more than 100 pages, with table of contents and index -- can serve as an encyclopedia of Lie (super)algebras in characteristic \(2\).
